Roofing Material 101
Asphalt Shingles - This is the most common material choice. This is mainly due to affordability and wide array of color choices. Lifespan of 15 - 30 years.
Slate - Slate is a very beautiful look that enhances the value of any structure. It can be applied in a variety of patterns. Slate offers fire protection and low maintenance. Life expectancy is between 60 - 150 years depending on the grade chosen.
Copper - Much like slate, copper will last a life time. It is also environmentally friendly as it is 100% recyclable. As copper ages it changes colors, which is an interesting transition to watch over time. Copper requires close to nothing in the realm of maintenance.
Cedar Shakes - Wood shakes will lower your energy cost as it allows the house to breathe all the while adding extra insulation. Cedar shakes do require a certain amount of maintenance in order to prevent mold and rot.
Metal - Metal roofs are durable, fire retardant and almost maintenance-free. They are also energy efficient; metal reflects heat and blocks its transfer into the attic. Homeowners switching to metal roofing reported saving up to 20 percent on their energy bills.
Clay Tiles - The expected lifespan is greater than the lifespan of the material on which the roofing rests. Tile won't rot or burn. It requires little maintenance, and comes in a variety of colors, types, styles and brands.
Gutter - Having well-functioning gutters is essential to protecting the stucture of your home or business. An old or damaged gutter can cause thousands of dollars in water damage that could have been easily prevented.
Chimney Caps - Without a cap, the rain will run into your stove, fireplace or heater and/or ruin your walls and ceilings. Birds and other animals will enjoy the warmth of your chimney and possibly clog it with nests. The cap helps keep them out.
